All right, so I grew up watching Xena: Warrior Princess and I refuse to apologize for my love of completely pulpy, totally improbable fantasy warrior outfits. Of course, that doesn’t mean I don’t realize that this armor would be about as useful in a fight as an actual cocktail dress, but it’s never stopped me before.

One of the great joys of paper dolls, if I may get philosophical for a moment, is that they can be anything or anyone. Any character you can imagine, can be created with just a change of clothing. Starting a new series a little daunting after having created works like Marisole Monday & Friends where there are, literally, hundreds of paper dolls.

Now, I both get the excitement of revisiting themes I always have enjoyed (like my pulpy armor today), but also the overwhelming realization that there’s hundreds of themes I haven’t explored yet- astronaut, circus, pirate, Lolita, post-apocalyptic, cyberpunk, all of fashion history and, of course, mermaids.

But those will be explored in due course, I suspect. This isn’t going to be the last set of fantasy armor for the Dames and Dandies, though it is the first.

Today’s Printable Paper Doll Inspirations: This Tunic and This Dress from my Pinterest Fantasy Board

I had fun drawing today’s fantasy outfits for the Sprites. They’re a little cliche perhaps, but since when I have I let that stop me from doing something?

Part of the fun of drawing the Sprite’s series is thinking of how to coordinate a guy’s outfit and a girl’s outfit to at least seem to go together, if not perfectly match. In this case, the guy’s outfit came first. I love the asymmetry of this tunic. Adding the layers of trimming was a way to emphasize that design detail.

The lady Sprite dress was inspired by this fantasy dress, which I confess isn’t very unusual. I did like the higher waist and I wanted to mirror the trim on the guy’s tunic. I added the metal details to the belt as a way of giving the whole look some more dimension.

In my head, these outfits are for a culture that lives somewhere cold. The boots and the long sleeves are for warmth. There’s also probably some symbolic meaning in the different trimmings, but I’m not sure what exactly.

I think the color scheme is also making me think frozen Northland or, at least, slightly temperate Northland. Today’s Printable Paper Doll Inspirations:Falling Leaves and Layered Gowns

After I finished the Elements dresses for the Sorceress Gowns Project I wasn’t sure what to draw next. The elements made a lot of sense to me, but then I was like… What other sorts of gown themes can I explore?

However, as autumn has come to Alabama and with it there are lots of leaves turning, I decided an series on the seasons would be a fun thing to work on next. So, today’s Sorceress Gowns Project paper doll outfit is based on the themes and colors of autumn.

I wanted to use colors that I see in the hills around town these days. The rich reds and yellows of turning leaves. I chose to do several different leaf designs.

The staff was inspired by a tree branch, though I’m not sure it entirely works.

And like all the Sorceress Gowns, she has some pretty cool boots.

I haven’t drawn winter, spring or summer yet, so this might end up the lone gown, but I plan on them. I just haven’t decided what I want them to look like quite yet. I’ve been working on thumbnail sketches for those dresses. I think I have a decent idea of what they might look like.

Of course, I tend to change my mind a lot, so it is also totally possible that I will before I do the final dresses.

Today’s Printable Paper Doll Inspirations: This Steampunk Outfit

While I was never a big colorer as a kid, I do love creating black and white paper dolls, like today’s steampunk coloring page. I never liked coloring big expanses when I did color. So, the paper doll designs with more detail would be, I think, more fun to color.

(I maybe wrong of course. I don’t work in non-computer media much anymore. Someone who does should feel free to correct me in the comments about my coloring assumptions.)

So, I was very much feeling that I didn’t want to draw another steampunk fashion paper doll set when I saw this wonderful steampunk outfit on Pinterest and changed my mind. At first, I confess, it was the hair that got me, but I also adore the bodice.

So, I set to work on the paper doll’s bodice and the bloomers. Then I did the tights and invented some shoes. Striped stockings might be cliche, but I still really like them.

The hat was a last minute edition, because I thought the outfit needed something else. The set just didn’t feel complete without it.

Personally, the garters at the top of her stockings make me smile the most. I think they are just so fun! Though potentially impractical, because if you must lock on your garters that would just be a pain in the butt.

Still, as I have often said, paper dolls are not a place for practicality. If they did, I don’t know if I could draw them anymore. Half the fun is creating things I think look cool but would never wear.

Today’s Printable Paper Doll Inspirations: This Amazing Leather Bodice

I don’t really know what is going on with today’s printable paper doll clothes for the Mini-Maidens. Is she a pirate? Is she a warrior? Is she just someone who super adores thigh high boots?

The possibilities are truly endless. Endless I tell you!

This incredible leather bodice with cut outs inspired this whole outfit. The moment I saw it I knew I wanted to draw it. Beyond that, I wanted to do something different with the boots.

I draw a lot of boots, but I honestly don’t think I’ve ever done a strap pattern like this before. Because I didn’t want the bodice to overshadow the boots, I treated the straps as almost jewelry. That’s why they got the elaborate studding detail and the fancy clasps on them.

This outfit came out beautifully, I think. I still don’t know if she’s a pirate or something else, but I want to find out. (Also I think she can kick my butt.)

Today’s Printable Paper Doll Inspirations:Renaissance Dresses & Princess Gowns

Sure, there’s a dress with today’s paper doll set, but really I wanted to draw boots. Because I love boots.

The dress, well, it’s there because I thought I needed something more than just boots. It’s a nice dress and very in style. Right now, the trend is for dramatic sleeves, so there’s a lot of bellsleeves and ruffle sleeves like this one being shown. Sleeves are very much the latest thing.

Personally, I like bellsleeves, so I don’t mind this trend at all.

Anyway, I wanted a simple dress, because I really wanted the focus to be on the boots. While I no longer create “sets” in the traditional sense, I do still really believe in playablity. It’s critical to me that each paper doll series function as a collection. So, while you can look at this as one dress and two pairs of boots, it is also a set that expands on the other contemporary fashion pieces that are available for my curvy B&B paper dolls.

If I were to coordinate it, I would use this set, this set and this set, and this set to start.

I have a few more trendy fashion sets for the B&B series in the words. (Also, more for the Sorceress Gowns collection, never fear fantasy fans.) I jump around a lot I know, but that’s just because I am interested in so many things.

I can’t imagine spending my time creating only one sort of paper doll. I think it would become very boring.

Today’s Printable Paper Doll Inspirations: My Steampunk Fashion Pinterest Board and This Photo

When I was creating today’s paper doll outfit, I was thinking about steampunk fashions. I was heavily influenced by this steampunk outfit I found on Pinterest. I particularly liked the two-tone skirt design, which I hadn’t seen before. In truth, I think I copied it a little more closely than I usually feel comfortable with, but that is neither here nor there.

I am still learning to draw top hats, so today’s steampunk paper doll outfit was good practice. I am getting better at them, but I also think hats a generally challenging for me.

Still, I will not get better if I don’t try.

When it came time to color this Marisole Monday & Friends paper doll outfit, I knew I was not going with a traditional steampunk color scheme. I just get so bored with browns and creams after a while.

Of course, if you are looking at this and going, “That is not what I want from a steampunk outfit.” Never fear!

A New Isadora Mini-Maiden Paper Doll to Color

Today’s Printable Paper Doll Inspirations: Fall Fashions

It does feel like autumn might finally be coming to Alabama. The weather is starting to cool down and today was just beautiful. I spent part of the weekend at the local botanical gardens. They are free and a wonderful place to go walking. I really enjoyed them and I want to go back again.

Today’s Mini-Maiden paper doll is Isadora who I haven’t featured since March when she was a faun. Isadora is named for Isadora Duncan, the dancer. I can’t remember if I mentioned that recently, but someone asked me how I name my paper dolls a while back and I was like, “Well… kinda randomly, truth be told.”

Anyway, I’ve been going through the fashion magazines of the season. I am ready for boots and I am ready for tights. Isadora doesn’t have tights, but she does have some fun boots. I love autumn and winter. They are by far my favorite seasons in Alabama.

Her other shoes are more formal. I thought her dress could go either way depending on the shoes. I also try to draw extra shoes when I draw dolls. An old habit from my full color dolls with skin tones.

Isadora, being in black and white, is a paper doll you can color anyway you wish. That’s part of the flexibility of black and white paper dolls.

I confess though, I was never a big “colorer” as a kid, so I still prefer the ones in color.

The Sprites And Their Pulpy Fantasy Armor

Today’s Printable Paper Doll Inspirations: I always blame these forays into pulpy absurd fantasy armor on Xena: Warrior Princess

Because working full time and going to school is hard, I have been trying to get a whole week’s of blog posts scheduled each weekend. As, I sat down to schedule this next week I was struck by the lack of content.

While I was worrying about how I was going to get through the next two weeks, I stumbled across today’s pulpy fantasy set for the Sprites paper dolls.

I don’t know why I had forgotten about it. It was all done, except for layout. Why I hadn’t done the layout, I don’t know. I drew and colored it at the same time I colored the Regency set and this fantasy set that I posted earlier.

Still, who I am to look a gift horse in the mouth. So, this Monday here’s a new Sprites set. I love pulpy fantasy sets. I blame this on having watched a lot of Xena: Warrior Princess at an impressionable age. I also feel like I draw enough practical paper doll armor, that I can get away with also drawing totally impractical paper doll armor.

As for the rest of the week, on Wednesday there will be a new addition to the Poppets 1920s collection. Friday, you can look forward to the September edition of the 2017 Paper Doll Collaboration.

Regency Paper Doll Clothing For the Sprites Printable Paper Dolls

Today’s Printable Paper Doll Inspirations: I looked at a lot of stuff to design these, but here are a few this fashion plate, this jacket, this dress and these shoes

I wanted to dabble in regnecy men’s fashion today. In part, because I have been reading a lot of regency romance novels lately. The Regency is also an era where I really love the men’s clothing. I think the women’s clothing is pretty nice, but the men’s clothing really enchants me.

As many of you know, I’m not quite as comfortable with men’s fashions as I am with women’s fashions in history. I can pretty well eyeball women’s clothing from the last 300 years and make a good guess at the era, but men’s clothing remains harder.

It’s partly that I find the changes more subtle and partly that I’ve never had a much of a passion for it.

But since I do love drawing for the Sprites, so I have been slowly trying to face my fears of men’s historical clothing. Which brings me to back to today’s set of regency paper doll clothing, that I created using a variety of reference images.

The man’s suit was based on this suit, this jacket, this suit and this suit. The dress is based on this dress, this dress, this dress and this dress. Her shoes are based on this pair, this pair and this pair. Because the dates on the source pieces range from the early 1800s until about 1820, I chose circa 1810 as the best middle ground date to describe these pieces of regency paper doll clothing.

Every time I post something “new” to me, I feel a little nervous, especially because I know that this is a era of fashion history that many people are very passionate about. Still, I hope to do what I do which is learn more and keep improving my understanding of the fashions of the era.

After all, every paper doll I create is a work in progress.

Marisole Monday Goes Cyberpunk with some Amazing Boots

Today’s Printable Paper Doll Inspirations: The white dress in this Sprite set and the dress on the right

There are styles I come back to over and over again. This dress is very much like the white dress in this set and this dress, both designs I did years ago.

This is by far the most complex thing I have ever tried to create with the “shiny” look. It’s not perfect and there are problems, but I am not unhappy with how it turned out. Finding latex or vinyl reference images for the full bell skirt was basically impossible.

Also, google image searching the phrase “vinyl full-skirt” sometimes causes interesting results that are probably not kid friendly.

As for her hair, I was thinking of retro 1960s styles. I really wanted something that felt a little retro sci-fi. I

As for the color, I can’t really explain, but somehow once that dress was drawn I just knew it was going to be bright orange.

It’s like someone went clubbing and said, “I know! I want to look like a piece of cartoon fruit.”

And before I forget, I want to wish everyone a Happy Labor Day! In the words of Mother Jones, “Pray for the dead and fight like hell for the living.”

Janette in Space! The Paper Doll Frontier Apparently Involves Short Shorts

Today’s Printable Paper Doll Inspirations: Science-Fiction Television

Once I decided I was going to devote the whole week to Janette, I knew I needed to draw three really different versions of her. The first set on Monday was Janette: Contemporary Edition and now I’ve got Janette: Science Fiction Edition, or as I have nicknamed her- Janette in Space!!!

(Yes, all three exclamation points are needed.)

I love sci-fi tv, especially if it isn’t too heavy. I think I’ve mentioned before that I am super enjoying watching Dark Matter on Netflix. I just finished Season One (No spoilers please) and I am going to dive into Season Two soon. I also binged Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency recently. I’m also watching Midnight, Texas which I can’t decide if I like or if I think is sorta dumb.

The Midnight, Texas books are pretty good, if you like Charlene Harris‘s brand of goofy absurdist paranormal fiction, which I always have. She also has a great blog that I read for her book recs.

Anyway, to get back to the paper doll, today’s Janette has a ray-gun, or regular gun, it’s really up to you. I like that some of the latest sci-fi shows are just showing normal guns in space, rather than focusing on laser guns. I think it makes the violence feel more authentic, in a good way. Disintegrating people makes it too easy to pretend that wasn’t a person who just got killed on television and softens the danger in a way I often dislike.

I have no idea if that last paragraph made a lick of sense to anyone whose not me, so let me know in a comment.
