On Monday, I posted some 1930s paper doll dresses and I wrote about how the 1930s just don’t “do” it for me, unless I see something that intrigues me.

This applies to other fashion themes as well. Post-apocalyptic fashions are a source of some tension for me, because after a while, you can only draw so many torn shirts. Still, I was going through my A Pose paper doll clothing and I noticed that it all felt really feminine and soft to me. So, I said to myself, the A Pose paper dolls need something a little harder and less feminine. So, the end of the world seemed like a logical thing to embrace.

I chose post-apocalyptic, because I found this great picture on Pinterest of some sort of futuristic, post-apocalyptic mechanic and I was intrigued. The mechanic part I didn’t keep, but I totally adapted her pants. I also gave them a hatchet, because sometimes you might need one and a canteen, because all the other post-apocalyptic sets have one, darn it. 

I did notice that I now have a post-apocalyptic outfit for all the different poses. There’s the C pose version and a B Pose version as well. It’s almost turning into a collection, but I don’t know what I’d draw next for it, so I’m not ready to declare it a project, yet.

As some of you may recall from last year, Julie of Paper Doll School, Miss Missy of Miss. Missy’s Paper Dolls and I teamed up to create a monthly paper doll collaboration. It’s been super fun so far!

Date night was our agreed upon February theme. I was kinda not sure where to go with it. I first planned to draw a fancy evening gown, but how many of us wear that on an average date night? I certainly don’t!

Missy drew the base and her paper dolls often have a very anime style. I think this has been influencing me. I kept thinking about whimsical cute pieces as I was designing these date night paper doll clothes.

I had a bunch of fun designing her wig. It might end up needing a floating tab, so you may need to add one. I didn’t draw one, but I am thinking maybe I should have. Oh well, these things happen.

Some new post-apocalyptic designs for the B Pose Dames to match the designs I did for the C Pose Dandies. I had a lot of fun with these, though like a lot of my post-apocalyptic stuff, they are not terribly practical. Still I never let practicality get in the way of my paper doll designs. 

I love Post-Apocalyptic designs for clothing. I collect them on a Pinterest board for Post-Apocalyptic Fashions and one of the inspirational images was this one.

Trendy Winter Styles For The A Pose Dames

I love fashion magazines, particularly People Style Watch, because it has really clear clothing photos that make it super easy to draw paper doll clothing based on the styles.

Yes, I judge fashion magazines on how easy it is to draw paper dolls based on their photos.

Anyway, one of the things I enjoy in the fashion magazines is seeing what is considered trendy in any given season. This winter two big trends have been sleeve details, folkloric florals and embroidered jeans. I love embroidery, so I am not at all upset about this trend.

Today’s A Pose paper doll clothing covers all these trends. There’s a bell sleeved sweater, a folkloric printed skirt and a pair of embroidered jeans. To accessorize each outfit, I also added a pair of ankle boots. The pattern on the jeans is based on traditional crewel embroidery designs. I’ve always loved crewel embroidery.

It’s one of those things that I feel like if I had time, I would want to learn how to do. I never seem to eke out the time to do it, though.

(Also, because I was curious, the phrase “eke out” dates back to the 1590s and means to “extend or make last longer.” Who knew it was that old?)

Anyway, this is the first contemporary fashion set for the A Pose girls dames.

I watch a lot of science fiction television. I finished the first season of Dark Matter a while ago. I haven’t gotten into the second season. I’m also watching The Gifted, an X-men like show, and the latest season of the X-files (though I gotta admit, it is not that good.)

Is there another sci-fi show I should check out? I haven’t gotten to the second season of Stranger Things, yet. That’s also on my list. 

Anyway, all this sci-fi television watching inevitably seeps its way into my paper dolls. I love imagining the styles of the future. I also find it fascinating the different ways the future is portrayed. I think you can tell a lot about when a show was made by how it describes the future. There’s the idealistic future of Star Trek and the more gritty future of Dark Matter. 

I designed this set of sci-fi clothing thinking about a semi-gritty sort of future. Not too gritty, or wearing white leather on boots probably wouldn’t be a great idea. I don’t recall there being a particular set of reference images for today’s printable paper doll clothing. I’m sure I pulled some images from my sci-fi fashion Pinterest board, but I can’t remember anything specific.

A Fiddlehead Fern Inspired Suit for a Paper Doll Prince

I grew up in Alaska. And if there is one thing that is true about Southeast Alaska, it is a super green place. There’s so many trees and foliage and moss. It’s as though the whole forest is shades of green.

Among all these mounds of different green things, there were many ferns. I grew up referring to most of the ferns as fiddlehead ferns, only to learn recently that there are several species that have that common name.

The “fiddlehead” of the fern is the coiled part that develops as the fern is growing.

I wanted to design a men’s suit to go with all the floral theme, but I couldn’t think of a masculine flower. So, instead I found myself reminded that the top a fiddlehead fern looks a bit like the top of a cane.

Once that occurred to me, today’s 18th century inspired men’s suit for a paper doll prince was born. It’ll fit the C Pose paper dolls, FYI.

Yeah, I confess my brain works in strange ways sometimes.

The fiddlhead ferns trim his cutway coat, decorate the cane and his crown. Full blooming ferns decorate the sleeves. The shapes on the edges of fern leaves echo the trim on the vest. The colors of ferns inspired the green color scheme.

I mean, I could hardly make a “fiddlehead fern suit” and then turn it bright red.

Also, I should add, that fiddleheads are edible and are quite tasty sautéd with butter and garlic. On the other hand, what isn’t tasty sautéd with butter and garlic? I think I would eat shoe leather if it was covered in enough butter and garlic.

I digress.

This suit was designed, of course, for the C Pose dandies and goes with yesterday’s lily ball gown. I don’t draw a lot of prince paper doll clothing, so I had fun designing this suit and crown for a paper doll prince, or king, I suppose.

Regency Inspired Steampunk Suit With Boots and a Top Hat

Every once in a while, I draw something that I can’t wait to share. This was one of those outfits. It’s kinda funky, detailed and a little sexy, I think.

Okay, so to start with I guess you could call this a steampunk suit. I mean, it’s definitely in that genre, but the silhouette is very much Regency, not Victorian. Here’s a few source images to show what I mean. There’s this famous drawing of “Beau” Brummel and this lovely men’s fashion plate as examples.

So, as you can see, the shorter double breasted jacket and the vest and such are all very Regency, as are the fitted trousers tucked into boots. But I made my jacket shorter than would have been common and my vest longer to really show off the style. And, of course, thigh high boots were probably not that common in the period.

Here’s an 1860’s suit in case you’re curious what an actual Victorian suit looks like.

I had some trouble coming up with a color scheme. I really wanted to use a lot of brown, but I didn’t want to just use browns. That seemed boring. So, I accented my browns with orange and teal.

To go with my suit, I drew a top hat and a cane, because it seems to me that any well dressed steampunk gent should have those accessories. 

After I’d drawn this outfit and colored it, I decided to try out a second color scheme in blacks and reds. You can head over to the Patreon page and see that version. It’s very Gothic feeling. Sometimes, I think most steampunk outfits would look gothic if you just made them black, not brown. 

But the steampunk entranced friends seem to always get irritated when I point that out.

There are themes I tend to return to over and over again. One of those themes is steampunk clothing. I have for as long as I can remember loved Victorian fashion. I was drawing modern styles influenced by the Victorians long before I ever heard the term “steampunk.” For years, oppositional as I am, I refused to use the term “steampunk” as a matter of principal.

Today, I don’t mind so much. I’ve adopted the philosophy that it is better to use a more universally recognized term “steampunk fashion” than my own personal preference for “neo-Victorian fashion”. This is probably the metadata writing librarian in me.

Anyway, today’s steampunk paper doll outfit was influenced by this lovely photo, particularly the women’s jacket. I also really wanted to experiment with drape while designing this coat and I had a lot of fun drawing the hem line.

The leggings and the boots are fairly “standard” styles for me. I’ve drawn a lot of lace up boots with straps over the years. I was thinking long term a bit though with these pieces. As the first steampunk designs for the A Pose Dames, I wanted to make sure they would be mix and matchable easily with future steampunk designs.

And fear not my steampunk loving readers (I know there are a few of you out there), there will be more steampunk designs. In fact, tune in on Friday for a Regency steampunk suit for the C pose gents.

What to Wear to The End of The World

Originally, I was going to start the guys series with jeans, but after I thought about it, I decided the jeans were too boring. Realistic? Oh yeah, but… not exactly pulpy fantasy armor or an elegant fantasy gown.

So, I moved the jeans to Friday and instead decided to open up with these post-apocalyptic outfits. Plus a reader commented on my Facebook page about how excited she was for more post-apocalyptic clothing.

See? I do actually listen to people.

Anyway, I spent most of Christmas time with my parents in the Southwest. I also spent most of that trip working on paper dolls for this month like mad woman. So, the colors of this post-apocalyptic clothing really reflect the colors of the desert. The thing about the desert is that at first glance it just looks brown. When you really watch how the color changes when the light changes, you realize there’s a whole depth of ochre, hazy purple and soft mossy teal there. Suddenly, the desert doesn’t look brown anymore than a forest is just green. 

It is one of the things I love about the desert. 

It is also the same color scheme that I used for this Sprite’s paper doll set of apocalyptic clothing. I had planned on developing a new color scheme, but I rapidly realized that my “new” color scheme was almost identical to this older color scheme, so I decided to borrow it instead. 

Lazy? I prefer to think of it as time management. 

Design wise, I drew inspiration from this set of armor and this pair of pants. Both pieces come from my Post-Apocalyptic Fashion Pinterest board. I haven’t done it yet, but I think I really need to design something that used this amazing leather arm piece. I’m kinda in love with it.

One of the ironies of my working style is that I somehow end up with lots of paper doll content that ends up posting way out of season. Shorts in the winter cold are not at all uncommon in my paper doll world. However, since I drew all these outfits for the next few weeks in December, I felt wonderful about posting some honest to goodness winter clothing in January.

It’s been so chilly these last few weeks in the South. I’m not used to it threatening to freeze so much here. I’m keeping my heat on when I leave the house and a faucet dripping. I would leave my under-sink cabinets open, but my cat is very curious and I worry she’d get into the cleaning supplies I keep down there. These are the choices one makes when one has a cat, I suppose.

So far, no pipe problems. It is warmer this week than it was last week and cold weather kills off the bug population, so I am trying to be positive about the whole thing. Meanwhile, I’ve broken out my wool coat, gloves, boots, scarf and hat.

The B Pose paper dolls have done the same with today’s outfit. One fur collared coat, a pair of boots, long sleeved t-shirt and jeans. For truly cold places, you can imagine the jeans are lined in flannel. I really do enjoy drawing coats and I should do more of them, I think.
