In case you missed it, earlier this week, I shared the blue version of this paper doll with her mostly black and white wardrobe.

When I was working on a color scheme for this paper doll, I kept thinking about how I wanted to try a second color scheme. I was having way to much fun playing around with colors. Inspired by the chilly weather outside, I decided to experiment with warm and cheerful colors. Thus, the second iteration emerged, bathed in shades of pinks and yellows. These colors, reminiscent of spring and summer, hopefully bring a sense of summery happiness, especially in contrast to the dark chilly winter nights I’m currently experiencing.

I really love pink.

One subtle is that all the black on this set isn’t actually black- it’s a very dark gray with a pink tinge. So, that was an attempt to tie the whole thing together.

By the way, I really want to express how much I appreciate all of you who have supported this creative journey. Thank you for being a part of this adventure, especially since right now things are sort of unknown.

Additionally, I think I somehow messed something up on Patreon by pausing things in January, so… I likely won’t be doing that again! Meanwhile, we’ll triage along best we can!

Today’s paper doll is a super cute alien with a sort of underwater theme. I mean, if I am going to draw space creature paper dolls, I think I should at least give them a fancy wardrove of mix and match clothing, right? Right. I mean, space creatures want to look cute, too.

I’m assuming that a desire to “look cute” comes with a sentience, which might be a pretty big assumption on my part. (Unrelated, but am I the only person who learned the term sentience from watching Star Trek as a kid?)

Other thoughts about today’s paper doll: One of her outfits was inspired by this outfit for Marisole Monday, also my sci-fi Pinterest fashion board always inspires these dolls. The color scheme was supposed to be “galaxy” meets “ocean”, but like… not convinced it works. When I was a teen, I really liked the character Oasis from Sluggy Freelance and that’s probably where my thing for multiple ponytails (pigtails?) came from.

I caught some sort of post-Thanksgiving bug which turned into bacteria pneumonia. So, then I ended up on a cocktail of antibiotics and all the side effects of those were super fun. Anyway, long story short- I am at like 80% capacity at the moment. However, I am looking at a week off work for the holidays (the Uni I work at closes) and therefore I am super psyched for this week to be over.

Going to draw lots, pet my cat, and maybe sew something. Super psyched to have a whole week off!

Anyway, I hope everyone has a lovely holiday and enjoys this second little space alien paper doll. There will be two more I think… yeah, two more.

This is the first of a series of cute alien paper dolls that I have created.

The idea that art materializes in isolation is a pretty common misconception. Art is intrinsically tied to the world around us, shaped by our experiences, cultures, and surroundings. Everything is influenced by something. There’s this myth of the lone artist just creating out of nothing, but that’s really not the process. So, let me talk a little about how I ended up with a pastel alien paper doll today.

When I was in the Lower 48, I started noticing the Rainbow High dolls and I saw one called Zooey Electra. Her hair was a major influence on today’s paper doll. I read this review of that doll and it reminded me about the Novi Stars dolls which were fashionable alien dolls. Super fun and super creative, but the line didn’t take off. So, with those two things in mind (and my whole cyberpunk and retro futurism Pinterest boards to look at), I started doodling a set of cute retro inspired little alien paper dolls.

Back on the 19th of October, I showed a preview of these ladies. Back then, I wasn’t sure which order I would finish them in or what clothing I would pair with which doll. I’m still not 100% sure about some of the final touches. I’ve finished two and am struggling with color schemes for some of the other ones.

The point is that this is the first cute alien paper doll, but not the last cute alien paper doll. There will be more! There’s four at the moment. There might be a fifth… I haven’t decided yet.

In the meantime, enjoy this little pastel paper doll and I hope you had a great Thanksgiving. I went down to visit family and just returned, a little tired to my home.

The Paper Dolls

 I feel like starting the dolls, because well, you need a doll to wear the clothing, right? Right. I was very pleased with this doll and I still am. There’s a few things I would change now, but all in all, I’m quite happy with how she came out.

The Historical Clothing in Order of Historical Period

Originally, this project was going to be all 1910s clothing, but that didn’t last too long. I ended up with some 15th century stuff, some 1890s stuff, and some 1910s stuff. I’m particularly happy with how the folds came out in the 15th century gowns and I fretted for a long time over their headdresses.

The Sci-fi, Fantasy and Steampunk Clothing

I draw a lot of fantasy stuff. I like drawing it. It’s some of my favorite things to work on. I wanted to try out a bunch of different looks and see how I did using digital tools with them, rather than a pencil and pen. At times, I seriously missed my pen, but I can see ways in which I improved as the process went on.

One of the long terms goals of the July Project was to see if I could do a paper doll series similar to many of the ones on this site digitally. Part of that is finding a system, because I am system based soul. I played around a lot with different ways of doing shading and different ways of adding texture.

In the end, I decided I didn’t really love the shading, but I did enjoy trying out several different fun techniques here.

So, I wanted to experiment with texture and style. I wanted to see if I still liked the effect of noise texture if the style was less romantic and more something else.

And well, clearly, that something else should be space princesses.

I’m actually really happy with how it came out. I played around with the texture in a way that I think worked well- a larger scale noise effect in the background, but something more subtle for the doll herself. I’m actually very pleased with that part.

Something about this paper doll keeps making me think of 1980s and 1990s cartoons of my childhood like the X-Men and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and She-ra. I was a huge She-ra fan as a kid. One of my friends had a bunch of the She-ra action figures and we would play with them for hours in her bedroom and on her porch. I have a lot of fond memories of that.

All in all this was an successful experiment. I confess I’ve been frustrated a bit with working in Procreate lately (which I think is 100% normal when trying to learn a new skill), so we’ll see how I feel about everything in a few more days.

So, as I was finishing up my next batch of Stylish July Paper Dolls, I decided to try to share them in groups based on theme. I figured that was a better option and more logical and then just trying to dump a bunch of stuff all at once and share like six things today to get caught back up to where I should be. There will be three today and two shared over the next two days. That’ll get us all caught up.

To start with, here’s three different sci-fi outfits all inspired by Star Trek. I love Star Trek. I’ve become a huge fan of both Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks, because they both seem to understand Star Trek in a way most of the newwer Trek hasn’t. Anyway, they were the primary inspiration for these paper doll outfits.

I got this great book on Star Trek costumes called Star Trek Costumes (okay, obvious title) and I think it’s where I learned that one of the things they did in The Next Generation era Star Trek is that they didn’t have visible fasteners in general on clothing. It’s subtle, but it does actually make the clothing feel just a little… different. In high def you can totally see the zippers, but in the original definition, they would have been invisible to the viewer at home.

It’s really actually kinda a cool thing to notice. It somehow works really well.

So, I was thinking about that when I designed these sci-fi inspired paper doll pieces.

Is she a space explorer? Is she a space princess? I had no idea, but I did have fun and that’d what matters.

All right, here is number 18. I wasn’t really sure where this was going when I started it to be totally honest, but I somehow ended up with this sort of 1980s edgy dress fashion.

This actually started, if you can believe it, as an evening gown. Somehow this did not end up being an evening gown. That’s okay! Creative processes are rarely smooth, right?

I’ll openly admit this is the last piece I have done for this project, so it might be a few days before I get more finished up, but I still plan to hit 31 by the end of the month.

Inspiration:

  • So many 1980s/1990s sci-fi movies… Escape from New York, RoboCop, Judge Dredd, The Running Man…

On Sunday mornings, I usually get together with some freinds from grad school on the internet in a private chat and we all play a game of Shadowrun, which is a table top roleplaying game set in a fantasy/cyberpunk future. The game was written in the 1980s and it always feels very 1980s to me.

So, in honor of the the fact that it is Sunday and the fact that I have a weird deep soft-place in my heart for the way the future was concieved in the 1980s, I offer up this 1980s/1990s scifi inspired paper doll.

I think the look works best when you can actually layer it- the cropped top over the jumpsuit look will always remind me of the 1980s. I don’t know why. Maybe because it feels like 1980s work out clothing.
