Today’s Printable Paper Doll Inspirations: Summer Dresses

A pair of super cute summer dresses for the Ms. Mannequin series paper dolls. I really wish I could sit here and wax philosophical about this set. I could talk about inspiration and such…

However, the truth is that I just decided that I wanted to draw a pair of spring/summer dresses. The blue dress is sorta meant to be chambray which is a fabric that looks like denim, but is really light weight. (It’s great for sewing doll jeans, FYI.)

Along with the dresses, this set has two purses. I sorta thought the blue purse could go with the yellow dress and the pink purse with the blue dress, but I encourage you to pick your own favorite.

Being that I live in the Deep South, the weather has been already very hot and very humid, even though it is just May. So, I think I maybe breaking out my maxi dresses early this year. I’m not much of a short dress person, but part of the fun of paper dolls is that they get to have wardrobes that maybe I wouldn’t want to have.

I mean, I’m not exactly in the business of wearing dresses like this work every day. Unless, of course, my work was being an evil sorceress in which case… I would totally wear that dress.

I digress.

What do you think of these two dresses? Your style? I personally love the yellow one best, but what do you think?

Today’s Printable Paper Doll Inspirations: Sleepwear!

At the end of 2016, I asked all my Patrons for requests for 2017. A patron who chose to remain anonymous asked for pajamas and a teddy bear. Well, who was I to argue?

Plus, I’ve noticed that I have done very few sets of pajama’s over the years. I do have a nightgown tag where you can see the few nightgowns I have done. I probably should change that tag to something like sleepwear, since this isn’t a nightgown, but there you go.

In fact, now that I mention it, I think this might be the first pair of pajama’s I’ve ever drawn. Hmmm… I could go through the archives and try to prove that, but I’m not sure I feel like it.

I will confess that I think the sheep on these pajama’s look a little deformed, but then I’m not really a sheep expert.

Personally, I think her mug is full of coffee, but it could be hot chocolate or whatever other brown liquid you might like. I am super proud of the teddy bear. I think he’s darling. I don’t draw toys enough, because I struggle with them. There were three deformed teddy bear versions, before I ended up with one I thought was cute.

I went back and forth on the color scheme. I wanted something girly and kinda cute. So, I settled on lavender and aqua blue trimming.

The Poppet Printable Paper Dolls Finally Get Some Blue Jeans

Today’s Printable Paper Doll Inspirations:The Realization that the Poppets Have Very Few Pairs of Jeans

Most of us have jeans in our closets. I certainly do. In fact, since I am pretty picky about jean fit, I have three pairs of nearly identical jeans in my closet. Levi stopped making my favorite 514 curvy fit jeans and I have yet to forgive them for this, but I can still get them in talls from Amazon. Once they run out of stock, I really don’t know what I’ll do about jeans.

Anyway, my point is that jeans are central to most people’s wardrobes and I’ve always thought that every paper doll should have a few items that fall into the “basics” category- stuff you really need to mix and match with some of the more exciting clothing. Jeans fall into the “basics” category.

So, imagine my surprise when I realized there had literally only been one pair of traditional full length jeans for the Poppet paper dolls back in 2013 with literally the first Poppet paper doll ever Petunia. The second pair jeans are a pair of rolled shorts that I drew January and posted in February.

Well, all that changes today. Today’s Poppet paper doll clothing set includes a t-shirt with a pink elephant on it and two pairs of jeans. One is a light colored wash with a rolled hem and the other is a dark blue flared pair.

The way I see it, jeans go with pretty much any top I have ever drawn though this one might be a stretch. Ain’t gonna lie.

I also drew a stuffed teddy bear, because I like stuffed teddy bears. Not every choice is well justified in my world.

Today’s Printable Paper Doll Inspirations: Prom Season

It is prom season and while I am not in an age group that is going to prom, I have noticed a strong trend towards crop tops and full skirts.

While I did enjoy the proms I went to, I will openly confess that there is no force in the universe that could make me want to go back to high school. That was just a dreadful part of my youth.

While I was helping a close friend shop for a wedding dress, I noticed a lot of prom dress styles were showing off the midriff. This isn’t a new thing, by the way, midriff revealing evening wear dates back to the 1940s- here’s one example from the movie Lady Eve. It’s a hard dress to find a decent picture of, I confess. There’s also one in Casablanca, but I can’t seem to find a picture of that dress. Sigh.

Anyway, the point is the showing of your midriff in evening wear is not a new thing, but certainly hasn’t been in style for a few decades. It certainly wasn’t “in” when I was in high school heading off to Prom. That was the era of dressed based on the movie Titanic’s Jump Dress and also styles like this from Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Seriously, I knew at least three people who wore short satiny dresses under sheer layers to formals in high school.

I digress.

I had way to much fun drawing the huge oversized floral on the skirt of this outfit. I really wanted something that the full skirt to accommodate, so giant floral seemed like it would be fun.

Other then that, I’m just glad I got to share this dress before Prom season was completely over, though I strongly suspect it has mostly wrapped up by now.

So, tell me fearless readers, did you go to Prom? I did, but not my Senior year. We had a joint Junior and Senior prom at my school. I also went as a Sophomore, because I was invited by a Senior. That was actually the most fun one since many of my friends in High School were older then me.

Not bad memories, but, as I said above, no force on this planet could make me want to go back to high school.

Today’s Printable Paper Doll Inspirations: Stuff I see College Students Wearing

As some of you may know, I work in an academic library, so I spent a fair bit of time observing the fashion choices of college age students. If there is one thing I have learned, it is that colored skinny jeans remain popular and that even jeans for gents have gotten much more fitted.

I actually really enjoy taking break from fantasy, historical, steampunk or scifi paper doll creations to just draw some jeans. We all wear jeans, so I think embracing that idea is well worth it.

I’ve been seeing a lot more guys wearing skinny jeans, so I ended up trying to draw a pair of skinny jeans for a the Sprites’s Gents.

For the lady, I made her skinny jeans lavender. I’ve seen a lot of colored jeans this next summer season.

I created t-shirts for them both. T-shirts are easy to draw, but hard to create new ideas are tough.

For accessories, we have a pale pink purse and a statement necklace designed to match the jeans.

Today’s Printable Paper Doll Inspirations: Spring Fashion Trends 2017

Back when Ms. Mannequin started, they were all about contemporary fashion. Not really runway fashion (though if you want that Boots of Pop Culture and Paper Dolls is doing a great catwalk series right now, just sayin…), but the latest thing from the boutiques.

In essence, I wanted to draw trendy stuff right from the fashion magazines.

So, one of the things I drew a few weeks ago were some pages of trendy clothing for the Ms. Mannequin girls.

Today, they have a pair of cropped “paper bag pants” and I have to say, that is a really dumb name. However, these pants are very much in vogue at the moment. To go with them, I drew a wrapped crop top and then I added an scalloped edged pencil skirt, because I like to draw at least three pieces when I do contemporary paper doll clothing.

These pieces can mix and match with any of the Ms. Mannequin clothing you already have printed out.

So, when you are about to get the paper dolls ready for summer, they now have some on tread cropped “paper bag” pants.

Today’s Printable Paper Doll Inspirations:Statement Pencil Skirts from the Fashion Magazines

You can blame today’s printable paper doll clothing on my addiction to fashion magazines. Or I suppose be thankful to my addiction. Your choice. 🙂

For someone who wears almost the same thing to work every day, I love looking at the fashion magazines. It doesn’t matter that I’ll never wear half of what is in the fashion magazine, I still enjoy looking at the pictures.

My favorite pictures get to become paper doll clothes. I noticed a lot of pencil skirts with super bold patterns on them. I actually really like this idea and if I wasn’t such a conservative dresser, I would totally try out this look. Maybe I still will if I can find one I like enough.

Until them I am sticking too my cardigans, grey trousers and white button down look. It has served me well.

To turn the pencil skirts into a real paper doll outfit, I added the pretty simple blouse and some cute shoes.I think this set with Faye, this set with Hazel or this set with Isadora would be great for mixing and matching in.

Today’s Printable Paper Doll Inspirations: Polka-dot socks and Applique

One trend I have noticed in my children’s clothing research is a new appreciation for handwork like embroidery and applique. I love applique and so that was the source of inspiration for today’s contemporary Poppet outfit. Obviously, I designed the skirt first and then put together some other pieces to go with it.

Even as a grown up, I love the idea of a set of pieces of clothing that can be mixed and matched into different outfits. Heck, that’s how I shop for my own work clothing.

The trimming on the pants was added after I felt like they needed something a little extra. Sometimes, I find drawing the same basic thing over and over again a little dull. Pants are pretty much just pants, a lot of the time.

I say this as the girl who usually buys two pairs when I find a style that fits, but then I think my own dress choices don’t have to impact my artistic paper doll dress choices. 🙂

Today’s Printable Paper Doll Inspirations: An Oscar’s Dress by Oscar De La Renta

The February theme was inspired by the Oscars and we all decided to draw an Oscars dress. Well, I went with an Oscar De La Renta inspiration last month and I might have gone for the same thing again. What can I say? I love his designs.

So, here is my 2017 Collab Paper Doll’s Oscar Dress. It’s Outfit 36 from Oscar De La Renta’s Pre-Fall 2014 collection. Here is another favorite from that collection.

I admit the put this dress together in a rush. Somehow February has completely gotten away from me, so here’s no wig to go with today’s dress, but you an use one of the wigs from the paper doll’s page, I think in a pinch.

And I am super pleased to announce the Miss Missy’s Paper Dolls has joined in the paper doll creation fun. So, here is her interpretation of the base doll.

Today’s Printable Paper Doll Inspirations:Stuff I saw When I Went Clothing Shopping

I find that with my new daily posts, I seem to shy away from contemporary clothing in a way that I didn’t before. I just finished a bunch of future Marisole Monday & Friends paper doll posts and not one of them is a contemporary fashion set. (There is, however, a super cool 1920s golf outfit that’ll go up in a few weeks and it’s darn cute.)

The point is that I do believe in paper doll diversity. That doesn’t mean that I only want to have a lot of skin tones. It also means that I want variety of themes.

I like variety. Variety keeps me amused.

So, anyway, I am going to try to draw more contemporary stuff. After all, sometimes paper dolls want to flounce around in huge dresses and sometimes they want to wear skinny jeans.

Today, I decided that the Buxom & Bodacious got some cute modern clothing. A few months back, I went shopping for some casual clothing and I tried on some things a lot like these. First of all, none of them look good on me, but that’s what paper dolls are for!
