Circus Paper Doll for Coloring

logo-circus-bwMarisole’s gone to the circus this monday, complete with makeup.

I have mixed feelings about circuses truth be told. Sometimes I like them and sometimes I find them deeply creepy. I’m not afraid of clowns or anything, but there is something slightly off dark and strange that runs through the whole idea of circuses and carnivals.

So, I’ve been drawing paper dolls for a long time and I always expect to run out of the ideas, but then I run into new things on a fairly regular basis that I want to do or try out. I don’t know that I’ve ever really done anything like this set. I started collecting circus images that I liked on Dark Circus Pinterest board and then eventually those images evolved into this set of doodles which evolved into this paper doll set.

I was going for fashion as much as reality with these outfits. I can’t imagine a clown wearing such insane high heels, for example. My Dark Circus board where I was collecting images evolved into being as much about fashion as it was about circuses.

I’m nervous about coloring this set. I was going to go strictly black and red, but then I really want her to have pink hair.

Problem, will the pink hair clash with the red and black? I just don’t know. Guess the only way to find out is to start coloring.

  1. Coming from a circus family I get the creepiness factor. A circus comes into town, the circus people don’t really trust the locals and stick together, then just leave, leaving an empty field with holes for a tent, discarded candy wrappers and popcorn bags, and flyers everywhere. We’re not that scary, I promise! We’re just a big multi-national family that is stuck traveling a lot and wants to avoid making any connections in the local towns.

    I want those dresses.

    • A circus family? That’s so cool. I suppose I sort of forget that circuses are still around today. When I Was in grad school I stumbled across a book of old 1900’s circus photographs. I wish I could recall the name of it, but those images have stuck with me over the years. When I think circus (even though I know there are modern ones), I always seem to think 1900 to about 1950.

  2. *extended squealing* She’s MARVELOUS!! Pink hair with a black and white colour scheme doesn’t clash at all. The “girliness” of pink hair just serves to make it all the more creepy 🙂 Think Emilie Autumn!

    • Actually, Emilie Autumn was an inspiration for her hair… We’ll see how the coloring goes. I don’t always like red and pink together.

  3. I think this must my favorite ever out of all your awesome paper dolls!
I’ve spent this weekend coloring her in. I am now on the third version, with a black-white-green color scheme (after black-red-violet and pink-white-yellow)
Thank you so much for this Marisole! 🙂
