I’m working on a new series of Curves paper dolls. There’s a lot think about. I’m currently calling it Curves 2.0 in my head. Every paper doll starts with an idea. And then I go looking for inspiration. I’ve been wanting to do a pin up inspired paper doll for a while, so I knew that was going to be something I would explore with Curves 2.0.
If you’re interested, check out the rest of this post full of some of the images I’m drawing inspiration from. Otherwise, there will be a normal paper doll post up tomorrow evening.
These two sassy Gil Elvgren pinups have been providing some ideas. I love Elvgren’s style and how boldly he signed his work. Not a common trait among pin-up artists at the time. Pin-ups always lead to Rockabilly clothing for me.
Laura Byrnes is the photographer of this wonderful image and the dress comes from Pin-Up Girl Clothing a site full of pretty and sexy vintage inspired dresses.
The next question, of course, is if I am going to do something pin-up inspired, can I fine enough variety to keep me entertained. I don’t want to be stuck drawing the same thing over and over again. I get bored easily.
Fortunately, there’s a lot to work with out there. I’ve been eyeballing vintage pattern covers.
Both full and narrow skirts were very much in style in the fifties, but I like the full skirts the best. They can be both sweet and innocent, or they can be quite sexy.
Such a fantastic evening gown… I love the draping on either side and her half smile is very cute. All of these pattern cover images come from the Vintage Pattern Wiki, except the one below.
I love her face. She look’s so stern and fierce. I wouldn’t want to mess with her.
I confess that I’m still looking for good retro-scifi images and other things. I don’t want to just draw vintage clothing. Thoughts or ideas would be welcomed as I’m still formulating my plan of attack. The next thing that I have to do to prep for this new paper doll is to work out a template image- that means drawing the outline I’ll base all the dolls on. That’s the project for the weekend.
The green dress in the third photo looks like the one in Retro Pin-Up: Saucy for Marisole
Can’t wait to see Curves 2.0 🙂
I bet the model in the last photo was wearing a leather corset. She probably has a whip hidden in her fur there too.
I can’t wait to see what you come up with!
I have to confess I’m very glad to see people are excited. I was nervous about this post since its so unlike what I usually post, but I want to start sharing more of the process that eventually produces a paper doll.
I can’t wait to see what you come up with for Curves 2.0! I HEART Curves the most because she’s so fluid and moveable… does that make sense? There’s something to be said for roundness- it’s luscious. And it’s nice to see someone pay a favorable nod in the luscious direction.
Wow, you’ve got some great sources of inspiration there. I can’t wait to see how she comes out.
