Color blocking is one of my favorite fashion themes. I just love how it lets me play with different colors and experiment with how different lines look on a set of garments. I first drew this paper doll set last year, but didn’t manage to actually get it done until a few weeks ago. Sometimes, I am a little slow on finishing up my own artwork.

Let’s not talk about the large number of 80% finished projects lurking on my hard-drive.

By the way, this is only my 6th Dolls Du Jour paper doll. I created this series in May of 2020 as part of my move towards drawing more diverse figures. Figure drawing is my least favorite part of paper doll making and it is the part I think I am worse at. There’s dozens of abandoned attempts at figure drawing in my notebooks. I still don’t think my figures are as diverse as they could be, but I also can only bang my head against the things I don’t like doing so long.

Just let me draw silly shoes and ignore when my people look off, which they often do.

I love drawing historical fashion for paper dolls. It’s a little more time consuming than some of the other things I do, but well worth the extra work I think. I tried to capture the broad shoulder of the 1940s with all these pieces and I think some of them were more successful in that than others. Color-wise, I wanted things to be super mix and match. Plus, of course, today’s 1940s Jade paper doll can wear any of the dresses for last week’s 1940s Topaz paper doll. For my patrons, there was a 1940s Lapis paper doll who can also share.

Jade’s hair is based on that of Butterfly McQueen. I often use actresses for vintage paper dolls hair reference images and I don’t have a strong collection of vintage black fashion magazines. Since I work with historical documents for a living, I have no desire to add piles of old magazines to my world. I do enough of that at my job. Today’s cyberpunk paper doll is a combination of some Jewels and Gemstones 1.0 content and some new content that I created to fill out the set. When I design a mix and match paper doll set I think a lot about layers. With four bottoms, three tops and two pairs of shoes, you’re getting 24 outfit combos out of nine pieces. However, I’m not 100% sure how well the black boots will layer under the skinnier pants, so I might feel more comfortable calling it 21 combinations. (I have a whole post here about how I do outfit combo math.)

Funny fact, that post is actually one of my most popular, because apparently people need help calculating clothing combinations? I don’t 100% get it, but whatever. A little algebra never hurt anyone and my middle school algebra teacher is no doubt very proud.

This paper doll set was my partner’s suggestion for a playing card themed paper doll creation. When I think of playing cards, I sort of inevitably end up thinking of retro glam, show girls and a little bit punk. That maybe helps explain why this paper doll’s clothing is a little all over the place. However, I do think there’s some neutrals like jeans you could steal from Polka-Dots, Retro-Beach Summer or Flowers and Showers. I am realizing though, as I write this, that I haven’t done that many contemporary fashion sets for the Jewels and Gemstones 2.0 ladies.

By the way, I’ve had a few people reach out over my long absence. I was dealing with some family things. It’s all resolved and I have a wonderful support network. Thank you for your kind words and things will slowly be ramping back up here as I get more settled.

Summer Crop Tops with Jade

I am fascinated by the return of crop tops in fashion these days. Unlike in my teenage years, they are now paired with high rise pants which I think is a much more flattering look than the low hip-huggers of the early 2000s. 

All the colors in this set are based on the Pantone 2021 Spring color scheme. 

You will need to cut along the dolls shoulders to fit these items on. I have put a dotted line there, but with the long dark hair it can be hard to see.

This steampunk paper doll was put together from a few older sets that I resized and new pieces. I loved these striped trousers and the hair and shoes from my first Sapphire Steampunk Doll. I love everything Victorian inspired. I have no idea if steampunk is still in, but I do very much enjoy drawing it. So, I hope it is.

Maybe because I saw Ever After at a young age, but I have a deep affection for Italian Renaissance inspired gowns and these are a few of them. Fantasy paper dolls rival historical paper dolls as some of my favorites to draw. This set of printable fantasy paper dolls is from my Dolls Du Jour series, lovingly known as DDJ. Named by a Patron (thank you!) these paper dolls are part of my goal to make some more curvy paper doll ladies. Each doll is named after a time or day, so this is Twilight.

Guardian of the City with Sapphire

I drew this paper doll back in… like early March? Way back a decade ago when I didn’t have to wear a mask and time had meaning. I knew from the start of it, I wanted to do something that really let me play with armor and I feel like warrior paper dolls are always fun to draw. I never had any as a kid, so I might as well make them now.

I feel like blond hair and dark skin is a combo I like, but I really struggle to get right. This one came out pretty well, I think. Still not really sure how I feel about the pink and teal color scheme, but I wanted something more interesting then just blue or brown. Blue and brown are the colors I tend to lean on heavily with my warrior sets.

Someday, I swear I am going to put together a bunch of my warrior and princess paper dolls into a collection and calling it, “Knights and Nobles.” Obviously, haven’t done it yet, but maybe next year I’ll get around to it. Adapting and expanding things from the blog to items I can sell on places like Etsy is such a smart idea, but somehow I never get around to it. I never want to stop offering lots of free paper dolls, because I like offering free paper dolls. However, it is nice to get paid for my work and time sometimes. Patreon does help, of course.

The real problem is that I don’t usually like going back to my old work, so there’s always that.

Fantasy Pretty Paper Doll Dresses for Printing and Playing

Sometimes, I just want to draw pretty paper doll dresses.

Okay. I pretty much always want to draw pretty dresses for paper dolls. Don’t get me wrong, I love doing variety (like this fisherman set), but I think anyone whose a regular here knows my first loves are the fantasy and historical stuff. And the fantasy stuff is easier than the historical stuff, because there’s no research involved.

Don’t get me wrong, I love research, but sometimes it’s fun to let that go and just play.

These pretty paper doll dresses were vaguely inspired by the empire silhouette of the early 19th century and the off the shoulder dresses of the 1980s. Basically. there’s nothing here that’s historically accurate, except that these are dresses. That’s about it. There’s a dress.

That’s where it ends.

I had drawn a specific version of Sapphire for this set, but I wasn’t in love with her hair and after trying to fix it like 17 times, I gave up and recycled an older Sapphire design from last year.

Flowers and Showers: A Colorful Paper Doll Fashionista

Spring showers bring summer flowers, or something like that. It might be snowing out, but that doesn’t mean I don’t like my summery floral fashionista paper doll options. Jade has a glorious garden inspired wardrobe of both older pieces and a few new ones for added fun. The dress is new, for example and I am super in love with it.

I first created this version of Jade to go with a formal gown, but I decided to separate her from her evening gown and pair her with a more casual wardrobe for a bit of mix and match fun. I am super happy with how her hair came out. There’s nine pieces here with make over 20 different combinations which isn’t bad for one paper doll.

It might be snowing outside, but I could use some summery thoughts. So, the color scheme for this paper doll embraces all the colors the world isn’t currently experiencing up here in Alaska. No snowy shades for our fashionista paper doll.

The problem with where I live is not that it snows. It is that is snows and then never melts until like March. That’s the problem.

A Pair of Halloween Paper Dolls! One Bee & One Fairy

I’m not super into scary Halloween stuff. I like the occasional well written ghost story and will watch horror movies if my best friend watches them first, provides me a summary, and warns me if I can handle it. Then I watch them at noon with the lights on and quickly watch something like the Great British Baking Show afterwards to keep myself from feeling to scared.

Yes, I am pathetic in this regard.

So, to do with the Ghost and Frankenstein’s monster of last week I wanted to end October with another set of Halloween inspired paper dolls. Sometimes, when I draw Halloween paper dolls they are clearly a person with costumes and other times they are meant to be the actual creatures.

This set I think falls somewhere in the middle. Ruby could be fairy or she could be a person in a wig with an ear prosthetic. Sapphire is probably not a bee (clearly), but she could be somehow. I’ll need to think more on that one. I paid the bee with the fair, because I knew I could draw one set of wings for them to share.

For this set, I stuck with a pretty narrow color scheme, as I wanted the wings and other pieces to be somewhat interchangeable between the two dolls. I’ve always felt like paper dolls are best when they have more options.

1950s Dresses with Sapphire

If I had to pick one period of fashion that I think I would look pretty good in it would be the 1950s. In the real world, I might be a strictly hoodies and jeans sort of girl, but if I do dress up, the the 1950s tight waist, full skirt, is my go-to silhouette.

Also, historical paper dolls are what I mostly collect and were my favorites as a child. So, it is a win-win all around for me. I did this series last year for the larger scale Jewels and Gemstones. It was fun to put them together as a set. I have even more 1950s stuff, so there will be another set of these.

Let’s talk some sources. Her dresses are Vogue 8596, Simplicity 3572 and Simplicity 4966. Two of the hats are from the Montgomery Ward Spring Summer 1950.. All of the other Accessory inspirations are from the Met including- this purse, these shoes, this hat, and these shoes. Her underwear is this corset from the V&A.

For Sapphire’s hair, I based her style off the hair styles worn by Dorothy Dandridge and Leana Horne two black stars from the 1950s. These photos of Lena Horne and Dorothy Dandridge (Here’s the same hair again on Dorothy Dandridge in 1954) were my inspiration.

They were also super interesting people. Dorothy Dandridge was an actress who was the first African-American woman to on the cover of Life magazine. She died quite young, sadly. Lena Horne was a wildly successful singer. She got blacklisted after being accused of being a communist.

I tend to love the color red. However, for this set, I chose to try to avoid using it, even though I tend to always want to. Her only red is the lipstick. I love the idea of wearing hats, even though I don’t. So, the hats as universal as possible, so I matched them to shoes.

The show Lovecraft Country made me want to finish this set. The character Ruby has the most amazing outfits. I love seeing a curvy, black woman dressed up in the finest 1950s fashion. The actress Wunmi Mosaku does an amazing job with the character and I love the costuming choices like this dress and this dress. Seriously, I want her all clothes.

I don’t know if I’d universally recommend Lovecraft Country, because it is a horror show and there’s some pretty graphic violence. I like it, but I know it won’t be everyone’s taste. Plus, it is uneven- hits well when it hits, but when it doesn’t… (much like Lovecraft’s writing) it’s a little painful. There’s also some transphobic stuff which I found pretty troubling. I think the show has good and bad things about it.
