Meet Carlos: A Latino C Pose Gentleman

Printable Black & White PDF Printable Color PDF More Paper Dolls & ClothesWhen I first started this whole new Dames and Dandies series, I knew I wanted to create at least two paper dolls for each of the poses. The C Pose gents were the hardest to work with, because I struggle with drawing men. Men and I… well, I’m getting better, but they remain not my strong suit.

Today’s guy paper doll is Carlos. Like all the “dandies” Carlos is in the C Pose and can wear any of the clothing drawn for that pose.

The name Carlos is, of course, the Spanish version of the name Charles. It’s pretty common, just as the name Charles is pretty common in English. I’ve known several different people named Carlos over the years and I’ve always liked the name.

Did I mention that I have more C Pose content than any of the other poses at the moment? I think having more guy stuff done than girl stuff might be a first for me. I literally can’t ever remember it happening except now. It’s a very strange feeling.

So, as a result there will be another C Pose post this Friday. It’s a super cool Regency/Steampunk suit that I am totally in love with and if it was real, I would wear it.

If, you know, I was male.

Even Paper Doll Guys Need Jeans

As I mentioned Wednesday, my initial plan was to start with this set for the Pose C paper doll guys, because I figured- All the guys I know wear jeans.

But then I also thought, ‘Jeans are kinda boring’

And that thought won out. So, here are the jeans and basic tops. I figure the guys of pose C (or guy of Pose C, as there is only Changrui at the moment) can wear these to hang out with friends, go to the bar or on a casual date. The shirts are all based on things I’ve seen college students wearing.

I have no idea what is fashionable for men these days, so I tend to rely on college student observation. I suspect college students tend towards the casual, so if I decide to draw some suits for the guys I’ll have to do some more research.

The fact is that most men’s clothing in the last 50 years has changed in nuance, not substance. The width of the tie worn with a suit. The shape of the trousers. The presence or lack of a hat. These are the things that define men’s clothing.

It’s all much more subtle than most changes to ladies clothing, but perhaps I only say that because I lack the practiced eye to analyze it. Something worth thinking about, I suspect.

Any way, I am pretty satisfied with these jeans and I like the t-shirts. When I think of playing with paper dolls, I am reminded that they need basics as much as they need exotic options.

Meet Changrui: A New Paper Doll Man

Years ago, I was told that you should never apologize for your art. However, I confess that I sort of feel like I should apologize, because I’m not great a drawing paper doll men. I’ve never felt as comfortable drawing men as I do drawing women.

And my mother’s remark that my Post C paper doll men had “awfully narrow shoulders” did not help any.

Still, the only way to get better at something is to practice. I have come around, mostly, to the the idea that men’s clothing can be interesting. I would like to learn more about historical men’s clothing, for example, and that’ll require a lot of research on my part. It’s something I am not as comfortable as I am with women’s clothing.

The first of the Pose C paper doll men is Changrui. Changrui is a name with Chinese origins. Like a lot of Asian names, the meaning of Changrui depends on which characters are used to create it.

I suppose you might say the Pose C dolls are designed to be the “Dandies” to go with my Pose A and Pose B “Dames.” Anyway, right now poor Changrui can’t be feeling very dandy as he doesn’t have anything clothing yet, but don’t worry- later this week he’ll get his share of outfits to wear.

Sprites In Some Space Cyberpunk Clothing

Today’s Printable Paper Doll Inspirations: This Shirt and Other Things from my Cyberpunk/Scifi Fashion Pinterest Board

I’ve been on a bit of a cyberpunk kick lately, so today’s paper doll clothing has a distinct cyberpunk thing going on. I collect cyberpunk clothing inspirations on my Pinterest cyberpunk/sci-fi fashion board. The only piece I remember influencing today’s clothing is this t-shirt which was the basis for the gent’s shirt.

I’m sure there were other influences, because you can’t look a dozens of images and not be influenced. That’s how inspiration works, really.

Originally, today’s paper doll set had a red and black color scheme. I though that was a little dull. So, I borrowed the colors from my Space Pirates Sprites set and used them instead. The added advantage of this is that you can mix and match this set with the Space Pirates set perfectly.

And how doesn’t want to do that? I mean, everything is better with Space Pirates. (Space Pirates are slightly more entertaining than regular pirates.)

Today’s Printable Paper Doll Inspirations: This Tunic and This Dress from my Pinterest Fantasy Board

I had fun drawing today’s fantasy outfits for the Sprites. They’re a little cliche perhaps, but since when I have I let that stop me from doing something?

Part of the fun of drawing the Sprite’s series is thinking of how to coordinate a guy’s outfit and a girl’s outfit to at least seem to go together, if not perfectly match. In this case, the guy’s outfit came first. I love the asymmetry of this tunic. Adding the layers of trimming was a way to emphasize that design detail.

The lady Sprite dress was inspired by this fantasy dress, which I confess isn’t very unusual. I did like the higher waist and I wanted to mirror the trim on the guy’s tunic. I added the metal details to the belt as a way of giving the whole look some more dimension.

In my head, these outfits are for a culture that lives somewhere cold. The boots and the long sleeves are for warmth. There’s also probably some symbolic meaning in the different trimmings, but I’m not sure what exactly.

I think the color scheme is also making me think frozen Northland or, at least, slightly temperate Northland. Today’s Printable Paper Doll Inspirations: Skinny Jeans for Boys

So, you might be thinking, “Hey… Wait a second, this is Tuesday? What is going on?”

And you are right! It is Tuesday and I don’t usually publish a post on Tuesday, but I didn’t want to make people wait an extra day for Víctor here. He’s the companion to Yumiko’s sundress on Monday.

Víctor’s not gotten much paper doll love this year. He’s not had a new paper doll set since 2016 and that was when he was busy being the Mad Hatter. I tend to pick Sprites based on “which one haven’t I done in a while?” which isn’t the most scientific method, but there you go.

Designing contemporary men’s clothing can be very challenging for me. Since I work on a college campus, I try to notice what the students are wearing. Despite subscribing to several fashion magazines, nothing beats seeing fashion in the wild. One thing I have noticed lately is the skinny jeans are being worn by the guys as well as the ladies.

So, when I was deciding what I wanted to create modern paper doll fashions for Víctor, my Latino Sprite gent, I knew I wanted to include skinny jeans. I’ve also noticed that colored jeans are being worn by guys, though mostly just greys and browns.

I did see purple ones for sale, but I suspect purple jeans for college boys are an outlier.

I chose the grey and yellow color scheme as a companion for Yumiko’s purple and yellow dress. I wanted it to coordinate, but not really match.

Today’s Printable Paper Doll Inspirations: Stuff I See Kids Wearing These Days

One of the classic problems I face is that I tend to draw and then ink and then scan and then post. Sometimes, this means I am posting weeks or months after I drew the paper doll content. While I actually like this schedule, because it keeps me from going nuts, there is a downside.

The downside is that sometimes I really don’t remember why I drew a set of paper doll clothing or what inspired me.

Take today’s summery Sprite clothing, for example. I have no idea why I drew these. I have the vague recollection that I felt like the Sprites had gotten so much fantasy stuff, that I should create something that was not fantasy.

“Something not fantasy” is not the most revolutionary reason to create a paper doll set, but that doesn’t make it less true.

I do remember in the coloring process that I struggled to find a color scheme that could be both masculine and feminine. It is no doubt a sign that I have stereotypical views of color, but I struggle with putting male paper dolls in pink.

If you do feel comfortable putting male paper dolls in pink, there is always the black and white version of today’s paper doll clothing.

In a side note, I really like the butterflies on the green dress and am super proud at how they turned out. Drawing tiny butterflies is hard and I am pleased with those.

A few other bookkeeping sorts of thing, I am starting a graduate program in the Fall. I don’t know how it will impact the blog, yet. I hope to continue posting regularly and with a minimum of disruption. However, I can not confidently promise that will be the case. So, I am just trying to let people know ahead of time.

Some Post-Apocalyptic Paper Doll Fashions for the Sprites

Today’s Printable Paper Doll Inspirations: Mad Max: Fury Road and Post-Apocalyptic Fashions from my Pinterest Board

Some of you may recall that I posted a pair of post apocalyptic Sprites a few weeks ago- Willow and Shirou. Around the same time I drew them, which was around the same time I rewatched Mad Max: Fury Road, I ended up drawing this set of clothing as well. I decided to wait a little while to post it, because really, how much post-apocalyptic fashion is too much?

There may not be a good answer to that question, I confess.

While I do enjoy the post apocalyptic stuff, I find the color schemes are often intensely limited. Things tend to be army green, camo colors and khaki. For this set, I really wanted to embrace the colors of the desert, so I chose a light teal, purple-brown and a oxblood red. The teal reminded me of succulents and the purple-brown of rocks.

Along wit Mad Max: Fury Road, which inspired a round of sketching for post-apocalyptic paper doll attire, I also used my own Post-Apocalyptic pinterest board for inspiration.

While I have doubts about the practicality of most of this clothing, I think we all can agree that practicality is never the hallmark of my paper doll creations.

New Romantics Paper Doll Fashions

Today’s Printable Paper Doll Inspirations: A Patron Request for New Romantic Fashions

While I was researching New Romantics fashion for yesterday’s printable paper doll, I discovered that it was a lot easier to identify men’s clothing that was influenced by the style than it was women’s clothing.

This picture was my primary inspiration for the outfit. Because I knew I wanted to tuck the poet’s shirt into the trousers, I had to make it all in one piece

I do sort of regret not going further and doing like an Adam Ant sort of outfit… but there is always next time.

This isn’t the usual way I design paper doll clothing, but I do think you have to the adapt to the medium as it makes sense. In fact, I just finished penciling a regency Sprite’s men’s suit that does the same thing.

Sometimes, it is easiest to draw outfits in one piece, even if that’s not my natural instinct.

Now, I will admit that while I don’t know much about New Romantic fashion, I do have a soft place in my heart for a man in a poet shirt. Can’t lie about that one.

I should add my favorite Adam and the Ants song is Stand and Deliver, but I should say in the interest of full disclosure that his music is more New Wave Punk than New Romantics, or so I’ve been told.

(I still listen to that song while I clean my apartment and dance around, so I will not be deterred from liking it.)

Meanwhile, I don’t really have a guy paper doll with quite the right hair for this outfit, but I might actually recommend Marcus The Warrior. The beads in his hair seem apropos of the style. Super long haired Mikhail might also work, but not as well.

Sprites Get Some Summer Paper Doll Clothing

Today’s Printable Paper Doll Inspirations: Vintage Inspired Contemporary Clothing & College Students

I wanted to make some summer paper doll clothing, but I confess men’s clothing isn’t my gift. Drawing contemporary men’s clothing still is something I find rather challenging, because I struggle to regularly come up with new ideas.

The guy Sprite’s t-shirt today is based off one I saw a student wearing on the campus where I work. The orange shorts are well, just a pair of orange shorts.

I mean, sometimes even guys want non-neutral pants, right? (I have no idea if this is true, actually.)

The Sprites ladies top is from a contemporary catalog. Her jeans are flares which I have been told are in fashion. I added the designs to the bottom when I decided there was something sorta vintage 1970s going on. Those designs were originally going to go on her top, but I thought that was too busy. The

Sprites, just like every series, I think think need a mix of clothing. I really enjoyed contemporary paper dolls when I was kid, usually ones from Golden Books which had punch out dolls and clothing. I preferred the cut out books, because with the punch out books the tabs often got ripped.

So, when I design contemporary stuff I’m always thinking of those old books, though today’s summer paper doll clothing owes more to what I see on the college campus where I work.

Speaking of all clothing types, tomorrow there will be a historical dress and then Friday there will be something sci-fi. I’m super busy this week and will be traveling a bit, so I will try to respond to comments and emails and such, but that might not happen.
