I have been feeling really ambiguous about my Dictionary Girl paper dolls lately and I haven’t even been able to get myself excited about drawing for them. Originally, I wanted to do this fun vintage thing which I did, but lately I’ve been feeling less then inspired. Their feet freak me out and I’m not in love with their faces. The truth is that I have moved towards a more cartoon style of drawing lately and these dolls feel… forced and awkward.

I’m really divided about this, because I think it’s important to have paper dolls of all body types and I think it’s important to show that healthy figured women are… well… healthy, but on the other hand… I’m having trouble getting excited about them…

You know, I feel like I’m writing an awkward break up letter… “It’s not you. It’s me.”

Anyway, I’m taking a break from these girls to see if inspiration strikes and if it doesn’t, I might be slipping them into the retired section with Curves paper dolls the first version, Flora the Regency paper doll and Florence the 1870’s paper doll.

But I do want to know how people feel about this and I was going to do a poll, but instead I thought I would just ask.

How important is it for the site to have a full figured printable paper doll? And if I decide on a different one than the Dictionary Girls, how would people feel?

  1. They are also my favorite that you draw. But you draw wonderful dolls, and I’m sure whatever you post will be great. Plus its no fun drawing for a doll that doesnt impress you.

  2. I love all of your paper dolls, but Dictionary Girls had never been a huge favorite of mine. But I think you should do what you want with them, we would understand. Maybe you could make a new, more cartoonish, curvy paper doll. 🙂

  3. I agree about the more cartoonish but still awesomely curvy paper doll. I would love to see that as I have always enjoyed Marisole a little more than the Curves series (despite having a special place as a curvy woman for the curvy paper doll).

  4. So, after reading some of these lovely comments (and thank you everyone who takes the time to comment), I realize that the post was probably a little more dramatic than I intended it to be.

Ana & K, I’m glad to hear that some peoples love the Dictionary Girl’s the best. I tend to assume Marisole is everyone’s favorite since the statistics bare that out, but I forget there’s a side to the site that statistics don’t tell.

Laura & Erin, I certainly think a Curvy paper doll belongs on the site. I just need to decide how to make it work.

It might be that the “trick” is to just re-draw the Dictionary Girl’s faces or it might be that I use the same pose and draw a different doll who can share clothing or it might be that I say “screw it” and do something new. I may also decide to open up the Dictionary Girl’s to more options as far as clothing styles… I haven’t decided yet. But I do love to hear from readers.

  5. Maybe put them aside for a while and come back. Because I love them too. Opening up the clothing style is a good idea though, gives you more options

  6. I must admit, Dictionary Girls haven’t been my favorite either. I don’t hate them, I’m just not nuts about them. Here’s a different idea for you, if you feel so inclined. I once saw pictures of Disney Princesses that were cartooney, yet curvy and sassy. I can’t seem to find the ones I’m thinking of, but I did try Googling “Disney Princess Pinups” and came up with some that were pretty close.

  7. The dictionary girls are my favorite, I like that they’re curvy and I really like their faces. I’d like them to continue, but if you don’t want to draw them anymore I think it might show through.

  8. I LOVE your dolls especially the Dictionary dolls & Marisole. I am not an artist so I have been using the paper dolls on my mixed media index cards a day (ICAD). Thanks so much for offering these for free! I have also been reading your posts & I think you are freaking hilarious! You don’t want your dolls in sex ed? LOL! Your not an Alaskan African American? ROTFL!………….Keep doing what feels right to you…….people will follow. Thanks SO much
